Participants from all over the world addressed the issue of the representation of warfare, in an attempt to assess the veracity or mendacity of war images and their probable impact upon the sequence of events. War images may trigger unfathomable horror or conversely and paradoxically attain sublimity. The margin is sometimes narrow between ethics and aesthetics, let alone the almost irrepressible shift from information to propaganda. Karine HILDENBRAND is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis. She defended her PhD at the Sorbonne on «Double figures in the movies of Joseph L. Mankiewicz». She focuses mainly on classic American cinema and is particularly interested in the adaptation of literary works. She published articles in reviews such as Positif, Études anglaises and Ligeia. Gérard HUGUES is Professor of American Studies at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis. A specialist of the Young Republic, he has published extensively on 18th century political thought. His latest publications include John C. Calhoun: théoricien de l’état totalitaire (University Press of Provence), 2002 and Jefferson and the West, the Lewis and Clark Expedition(Armand Colin), 2004.
