Is Classics still important and relevant to a Jesuit education? The answer is a resounding "Yes." Classics remains an essential component of Jesuit education. This series of essays argues and proves that Classics and Jesuit education are indivisibly intertwined. Moreover, any Jesuit school that embraces liberal arts must have Classics at the core of its curriculum.

Edmund P . Cueva received his doctorate in classics from Loyola University of Chicago and has taught at Xavier University since 1994. He became chair of the classics department in 1999 and was tenured and promoted to professor in 2008. He is also at present the director of Xavier University’s Honors Bachelor of Arts Program. Dr. Cueva is currently engaged in coauthoring a text entitled Lessons in World Mythology: A Comparative Approach. He is also Managing Editor of The Classical Bulletin and Editor of the Petronian Society Newsletter.

Shannon N. Byrne is an Associate Professor of Classics at Xavier University, Executive Editor of The Classical Bulletin, and Book Review Editor for the Petronian Society Newsletter. She has published articles in such journals as Classical Quarterly and Antichthon and is co-author of several collections of essays, including of Authors, Authority, and Interpreters in the Ancient Novel: Essays in Honor of Gareth Schmeling, and a Greek reader for Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe.

Fred Benda is a Jesuit priest who studied comparative literature at The University of Texas in Austin. He has taught English and Classical literature there as well and at other universities, most recently at Xavier University, Cincinnati. His pastoral responsibilities have included retreat director, pastor and various jobs in administration. Fred currently lives in Detroit where he works at the University of Detroit Mercy and Gesu Church.

Sabina de Cavi’s Architecture and Royal Presence: Domenico and Giulio Cesare Fontana in Spanish Naples (1592-1627) is an exemplary interdisciplinary study of the relationship between politics and art history. No finer or more vivid investigation exists of the role of the Spanish viceroyalty in Neapolitan architecture during its formative years.   It offers an unparalleled examination of the viceregal claims to legitimacy, casts brilliant light on the relationship between architecture, etiquette and ceremonial, and makes clear the critical role played in these developments by the remarkable architecture of Domenico and Giulio Cesare Fontana.
