This volume is a compilation of articles written by renowned scholars and promising young researchers, in which the Jewish space is revealed as diverse forms of life and relations that developed in the rich context of urbanism, social life, leisure and economic activities, and coexistence with the non-Jewish world. Having undergone various transformations, the Jewish space has preserved its authenticity and individuality. In the book, the Jewish space is analysed in a wide chronological perspective from the viewpoint of literature, history, architecture and social relations. This volume will be of interest to anyone interested in various forms of entertainment (sports, leisure, cabaret parties), living, participation in social life, reading and writing of Jews in Eastern European towns and shtetls in the 19th and early 20th century.

Jurgita Šiaučiūnaitė-Verbickienė studied at the Department of History at Vilnius University. Her Ph.D. thesis addressed some aspects of coexistence of Jews and the Christian part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Presently she is a lecturer at Vilnius University and Director of the Centre for Studies of the Culture and History of East European Jews. Her fields of interest are the socio-cultural history of Jews and comparative studies of non-Christians in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Larisa Lempertienė received her MA in Russian philology. Her postgraduate studies at Vilnius University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem resulted in a Ph.D. thesis on rabbinic exegesis in Lithuania. Presently she teaches Hebrew, commentaries on the Jewish Bible and the traditional Jewish culture of Eastern Europe at the Department of History of Vilnius University.

'In many contexts, it does not make senses to recommend a book just because two or three of the articles it contains are interesting. Jewish Space in Central and Eastern Europe is thankfully an exception to the wide-spread phenomenon of forgettable edited volumes. It is in fact, in my opinion, one of the most stimulating recent books on East European Jewish history. Its value lies not so much in the new information that it brings to the attention of the reader as in new questions that it raises. It is well worth reading and it belongs in every serious collection of the studies on Eastern European Jewry''.
