Ways Ahead: Proceedings of the First International Csound Conference
Editor: Joachim Heintz, Alex Hofmann and Iain McCurdy
Date Of Publication: Jun 2013
The first international Csound conference, held at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media (HMTMH) between 30th September and 2nd October 2011, marked the first time that the principal people involved with Csound – in existence since 1986 – met in person. This book documents not only the proceedings of this conference through its inclusion of the featured papers, workshop descriptions and round table summaries, but also includes interviews with developers and musicians, along with several new articles written exclusively for this publication. Reflecting the diversity of contributions to the Csound project that conference attendees brought, this book is organised into five main parts entitled “History”, “Development”, “Music”, “Usage” and “Education”.
Joachim Heintz began his composition studies with Younghi Pagh-Paan and Guenter Steinke in Bremen at the Hochschule Fuer Kuenste, after studying Literature and Art History. He is the head of the electronic studio Incontri at the HMTM in Hannover (Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media), teaches Audio-Programming at the HfK Bremen and is a member of the Theater der Versammlung in Bremen. As a composer, he works for instruments as well as for electronic media.
Alex Hofmann is a former student at the HMTM in Hannover. His studies focused on saxophone playing, improvisation, computer music and development of interactive music systems. He is currently working on his PhD thesis in Music Acoustics (IWK) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Iain McCurdy is a composer of electroacoustic music and sound art originally from Belfast and currently based in Berlin. Having come from a background of writing for fixed media, his more recent work has focused on sound installation, exploring physical metaphors of compositional structures through the creative use of electronic sensors and innovative human interface design. Physical designs are minimalistic, using primary shapes and colours and utilising instinctive user inputs.
