Mapping the Broad Field of Multicultural and Intercultural Education Worldwide: Towards the Development of a New Citizen
Editor: Nektaria Palaiologou and Gunther Dietz
Date Of Publication: Sep 2012
Isbn13: 978-1-4438-4031-6
Isbn: 1-4438-4031-9
The issues which are discussed in the 29 chapters of this volume address core matters with respect to modern diverse societies. The most important relate to the following: the societal needs of migrant populations and the educational needs of their children; the exclusivist policies which usually impact upon migrant groups; the need to enrich school texts and curricula with new intercultural and citizenship dimensions; the importance of integrating the notion of Paideia within the school ethos and educational programmes.

This volume has a dual aim. The first aim is to envisage the field of Multicultural and Intercultural Education from different disciplines at the international level, describing the new educational and social conditions that have been created by recent migration and identifying new trends in the field.

The second aim is to highlight the importance of Multicultural and Intercultural Education in the development of a new citizen, who moves around the world, interacting with different people, and has a dynamic and flexible identity with polymorphic personal, social and cultural characteristics – a new intercultural persona.

To sum up, this volume highlights that authors coming from different continents share some common ideas and tend to believe in the notion of Intercultural/Multicultural Education as a useful new dimension within the dynamics of many disciplines, as a new inter-disciplinary approach that is embedded within them and which characterizes modern societies.

As Guest Editor, she recently published a special issue of the journal Intercultural Education entitled “Intercultural Education: New Century, New Needs. Conceptual and Empirical Challenges” (August 2011, Vol. 22, No. 4). Her current research interests focus on educational issues and policies for migrant children in Greece, and on teachers’ education and training in the field of Intercultural Education.

Gunther Dietz is currently Research Professor in Intercultural Studies at Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico. His latest books include Multiculturalism, Interculturality and Diversity in Education (Waxmann, 2009), Islam in Education in European Countries (co-editor; Waxmann, 2009) and Interculturalidad y educación intercultural en México (co-author, Mexico-City, 2011). From 2010–2012, he served as General Secretary of the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE).

''There are few fields more open to distortion, often by politicians with particular interests, than those of multicultural and intercultural education. Thus, a substantial book setting out to explore these fields and to set an international agenda is particularly welcome. [...] The book is highly recommended to anyone interested in communication through education internationally, and in issues of intercultural education and citizenship.''

From Border States in the Work of Tom Mac Intyre: A Paleo-Postmodern Perspective

''Catriona Ryan has more than achieved what she set out to do.She has emphatically presented Tom Mac Intyre as a writer with a distinctive voice who not only provides a crucial link in the chain that goes back through Kavanagh to Yeats, but as a bridging figure, a transgressive author whose reflections on the Irish literary scene, and on writing more generally, have much to tell us about the ways in which constrictive critical currents can cut off living literary streams. It is clear from Catriona Ryan's painstaking excavation that Mac Intyre has been wrongly neglected. Her thoughtful and perceptive critical intervention will remedy that wrong.''
- Willy Maley, Litteraria Pragensia, 22:44 (2013), 131-134, p. 134.

“This is a critically independent piece of work that very much constructs and defines its own project, and maps an intellectual terrain of its own. It is an impressively original and also critically self-assured piece. It is marked by a sense of intellectual brio and also by the excitement of discovery.”
– Dr Steven Vine, Swansea University

“Since Tom Mac Intyre is a writer and dramatist who has received very little critical attention, this work intervenes in an under-researched area and offers an innovative and valuable extension of the frontier of knowledge in the field of Irish literary and dramatic studies.”
– Dr Aidan Arrowsmith, Manchester Metropolitan University
